SFU: Alumni Association of the University of Hong Kong, British Columbia Endowment Fund & Award

In 1993, the Alumni Association of the University of Hong Kong, British Columbia Endowment Fund was set up for the benefit of Simon Fraser University. We contributed for many years to this Fund, the purpose of which is to promote an understanding of the culture of the Pacific Rim through awards (The Alumni Association of the University of Hong Kong, British Columbia Award) granted to selected students doing work placement in Hong Kong. Our latest contribution to this Fund was in September 2001 when a cheque for C$1000.00 was presented to representatives of Simon Fraser University.

Over the years from 1995 to 2014, there have been 30 recipients of the award.

In 2001 and 2010, we have updated the information of the Fund and reviewed on how to manage it. We will keep on reviewing with SFU the application requirement for the award so that our Fund can benefit more students.

HKUAA BC 40th Anniversary Endowment Fund and Award

In late 2009, the board of directors of HKUAA, BC recognised that the establishment of a new endowment tenable at the University of British Columbia (UBC) would be appropriate to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the HKUAA, BC.

The purpose of the HKU-UBC Endowment Fund is to provide awards to UBC students who are enrolled full time in an undergraduate program (including professional degree programs) at UBC who participate or are selected to participate in a study exchange program with HKU on merit or activity bases. It is envisioned that the Endowment Fund will foster exchange not only between UBC and HKU, but also between Canada and Hong Kong, and to ensure the benefits for new generations of global students to come.

Over the years from 2012 to 2014, there have been 4 recipients of the award.

Mentorship Program

For a number of years, the Association has been supporting the HKU Mentorship Program. Many of our Directors have served as mentors for HKU students participating in the exchange studies program in UBC, SFU and UVIC. Each year, a number of HKU students join the program which will provide them with a unique learning opportunity outside their academic pursuits. Through close interactions with their mentors, the students will be able to improve their interpersonal skills, gain a better understanding of Canadian society and culture and also have a better focus on their future endeavors.

Community Service

Not forgetting our duties as responsible citizens in our adopted homeland, over the years, we have made donations to various local organizations.

Other than the universities, organizations we have supported over the years include:

  • Dr. Dorothy Lam Memorial Fund
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (see details below)
  • Sunnyhill Children’s Hospital
  • United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society (S.U.C.C.E.S.S.)
  • United Way
  • The Vancouver Library

From 2001 we have participated in the ‘Big Bike’ charity event each year to raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. To make the event more exciting, we had an inter-varsity Big Bike competition among our Association and the Alumni associations of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chinese University of Hong Kong. After the race, all participants will have lunch together.

We have also conducted fund raising activities for projects of our Alma Mater, including:

  • The University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research
  • HKUGA Primary School in Hong Kong.
